Description

This art piece serves to illustrate a cross section of the component parts of the osteon, which is a  unit of bone tissue in cross section. Hydroxyapatite gives bone its hardness. Type I collagen fibers are shown as reds and pink stripes and the lacunae are shown as black holes. The bone cells reside in the lacunae. The canaliculi are fine communicating channels that connect the lacunae.
